"I feel stuck"

It's the most common thing I hear, and it's almost never the real problem. Stuck is what it feels like from the inside. It doesn't tell you what's actually happening.

So here's what's usually underneath it.

There was a stretch when showing up wasn't the hard part. The work was hard. The work is always hard. But you didn't have to argue with yourself about it. The calls got made. You were at the office before you had to be.

Now you negotiate with yourself. Am I on the right path? Is any of this actually working? Should I just keep going?

And somewhere in there you started wondering if you've lost something.

You haven't. You ran out.

Motivation is a resource, and almost nobody treats it like one. It has to come from somewhere, and early on it came from newness. That's real fuel, and it'll carry you further than you'd think. But there's a fixed amount of it, no way to make more, and no warning light. It doesn't quit on you. It drains. A little less each month, never enough to notice in any given week, until you look up a year later and you're running on empty with no idea when it happened.

Because nothing about you changed.

There's a second problem underneath that, and it's the harder half. If the early success ran on motivation alone, you never had to look at the mechanism. You didn't need to know why it worked. It was working. So when it stopped, there was nothing to go back to. You can't rebuild something you never understood.

That's the real problem. Not your discipline. Not your mindset. You built your business on a non-renewable source of motivation.

So find a renewable one.

Renewable means the parts that work whether you're excited or not. The list built the night before, so the morning doesn't get a vote. The routine that doesn't care how you slept. The numbers you look at on a schedule instead of when you're in the mood.

Boring. On purpose.

But here's the part I don't want you to miss. This isn't a life sentence of grinding with no joy in it.

If you've been in a long relationship, you already know how this works. The early rush doesn't last. It was never going to. What decides how it goes isn't whether the rush fades, it's whether anything grows in its place. When something does, it comes from what you built instead of what you found. And most people will tell you it's better.

Same mechanism here. The first time around, the motivation created the work. Now the work creates the motivation. You watch something you built actually run. You see the numbers move and you know exactly why.

That's a better feeling than newness ever was. And unlike newness, it doesn't burn off.

You came in thinking you were stuck.

You're not. You ran out. And now you know why.

The rest you can build.
